Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Plan of operations during 2nd Seminole War coordinating attacks with Indian allies. "...Genl. Jessup has a command in pursuit of Sam Jones who has fled towards that place and it is not impossible but that he may attempt to cross over to the West side of Pai-hai-oku, if so, you may interceept him before you withdraw...I did not send Oulatoochu because he preferred going in a different direction & I though it advisable to gratify him."
