Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informing Coster that he can fulfill his friend's wishes for an autograph letter but cannot write to him on "...some problem pending solution..." as Coster had desired. "That would be too much like the too frequent request to pose for a motion picture." Goes on to criticize posing for the press and their cameras, whatever their intentions.
