Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concerns the cession of their land, their removal, and the remuneration they will receive. Authorized by President James Buchanan. Treaty arranged by Joel Palmer, Oregon Superintendent of Indian Affairs on the part of the United States, and the Indian leaders on 25 June 1855 (and ratified on 18 April 1859).
