Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter of condolence from a pastor upon the death of Hutson's fiancee, Emmeline Colcock, who died of typhoid fever earlier that month. Suggests that comfort can be found in the knowledge that this was God's plan and advises him to seek God. Axson was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia. Hutson served as a Corporal in the 1st South Carolina Infantry during the Civil War.
