Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Covers General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox including an account of the events leading up to the surrender, an interview between Ulysses S. Grant, and military information. Another article is on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Announces that John Wilkes Booth was the assassin and that he has been caught. Most other items are local news, advertisements, or public announcements.

The Hartford Evening Press was a partisan newspaper established by Gideon Welles, the Secretary of the Navy under Lincoln, in 1856. Hawley became editor in 1857. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Grant at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.
