Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Racist newssheet from New York, handwritten in dialect ridiculing republicanism, reconstruction and the freed slaves. Referring to President Andrew Johnson's reconstruction policies, states "De party must be up and stirring to head off Johnson's reconstruction. De highest price will be paid for new radical lies to be dewoted to dat loyal purpus."
