Title continues, " ... on his motion to repeal the fugitive slave bill, in the Senate of the United States, August 26, 1852." Printed by Buell and Blanchard. Untrimmed.

This was Sumner's first major speech in the Senate, delivered to encourage repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act. He denounced the Act as a violation of the Constitution, an affront to public conscience, and an offense against divine law.
