Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

News regarding John Brown's raid. Reports on conviction of Brown's fellow raiders, Gerrit Smith going insane, Brown's time in Kansas, his charitable deeds. Also an article urging reconciliation between North and South, and urging Brown be pardoned in an attempt to quell sectionalism. Despite urging a pardon, the paper strongly opposes Brown and his actions.
