Covers General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox in detail. Includes an account of the events leading up to the surrender, an interview between Ulysses S. Grant and Lee, the signing of the articles of capitulation by Lee, the era of peace, Richmond, Virginia, Texas and other states in the aftermath, etc. Has a listing of the passengers on board the steamer General Lyon which burned off the coast of Cape Hatteras. Includes a historical sketch of the Battle of Fort Sumter on 12-13 April 1861. Other articles detail local, international, political, court, and ship news, advertisements, and public announcements. Issue is uncut.
The General Lyon steamer burned around 31 March 1865. The passengers aboard included discharged and paroled soldiers, escaped prisoners and refugees, and some women and children. Out of 500 or 600 passengers, only about 29 are known to have survived.
