Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints news of Abraham Lincoln's inauguration ceremony and his inaugural address. Other main articles detail events of the Civil War, such as the capture of Confederate General Jubel Early's forces by Union General Philip Sheridan, the occupation of Charlottesville by the Union troops, and news that Confederate General Robert E. Lee is cooperating with Union General William T. Sherman. Other printed material includes auction sales, public notices, employment postings, and advertisements.

The first issue of The New York Daily Times was published on September 18, 1851. "Daily" was dropped from the title in 1857. The paper was founded by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones.
