Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Ruins of Fort Ticonderoga--Lake Champlain" circa 1861-1877. Depicts a landscape view of Fort Ticonderoga. In the forefront of the engraving a man carrying a rifle stands at the rivers edge as sailboats drift down the river. Engraved by Samuel Valentine Hunt after a painting by William Rickarby Miller. Printed by W. Pate. The original painting was in possession of the publishers at time of engraving.
