Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "The Battlefield of Brandywine" circa 1861-1877. Depicts a view of Brandywine Creek with a large house near the river. On the lawn adjacent the house, two cows graze while several people go about daily activities including one man fishing. Engraved by James Smillie after a painting by Thomas Doughty. The caption notes "engraved expressely for Graham's magazine."
