Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "the Bivouac at Monmouth" dated 1856. Depicts General George Washington resting by the fire during the Battle of Monmouth. Two soliders sleep behind him. Engraved by John Chester Buttre from the original painting by Alonzo Chappel. Painting in possession of publishers are time of engraving.
