Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Death of Wolfe (misspelled Wolf)" circa 1861-1877. Depicts the death of General Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec, September 13, 1759. An unsteady James Wolfe is held upright by two soliders, behind them soliders march forward into battle. Engraved by Augustus Robin after a painting by Henry Louis Stephens.
