Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "General Taylor at Monterey" dated 1858. Depicts the Battle of Monterey where the Army of Occupation led by General Zachary Taylor defeated Mexican troops led by General Pedro de Ampudia. Engraved by William Wellstood after an original painting by Alonzo Chappel. Original painting was in possession of publishers at time of engraving.
