Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One untitled engraving circa 1861-1877. Portraits of founding fathers upon an elaborate tombstone. The portraits include, Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Gilbert du Motier Lafayette. An old man sits at the foot of the tombstone looking up, appearing to mourn the founding fathers. Engraved by O. Pelton.
