Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Bombardment of Island No. 10: Gun and Mortar Boats on the Mississippi" dated 1863. Depicts the naval Battle of Island Number 10, February 28- April 8, 1862. Caption notes, "engaging the forts and batteries on the island and mainland." Engraved by W. Ridgeway after a painting by Chalres Parsons.
