Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle of Gettysburg" dated 1862. Depicts a view of Union forces during the battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3 1863. In the foreground, wounded soliders rest, behind them officers on horseback deliberate as the battle carries on in the distance. Engraved from an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of publishers at time of engraving.
