Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Attack at Rocky Face Ridge, GA" dated 1864. Depicts Union Soliders Marching towards the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, May 7-13, 1864. In the forefront of the image three officers rest atop a large rock and direct soliders to march forward. In the distance Union soliders climb an adjacent ridge towards Confederates posted on top. Engraved from an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
