Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Execution of the Inca of Peru by Pizarro" dated 1870. Depicts Spanish soliders surrounding an Incan man chained to a log with branches piled at his feet. In the foreground a religous man waves a Christian cross in the face of the Incan. In the Background Spanish soliders raise burning torches into the air. Engraved from the original painting by Alonzo Chappel in the possession of the publishers at time of engraving.
