At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Grand Durbar at Cawnpore After the Suppression of the Sepoy Revolt" circa 1861-1877. Depicts a view of Lord Charles John Canning bestowing jewelry to a loyal Rajah, surronded by an audience of British and Indian men. Caption notes, "Lord Canning investing the loyal Rajahs with decorations and proprietary rights." Engraved by H. Bourne.
