Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Depicts Lincoln with his wife Mary Todd and sons Robert Todd, William Wallace, and Thomas Lincoln circa 1860. Lincoln reads to Thomas, the youngest. Mary and their other two sons are seated around a dining room table. Contains an obviously false copyright date of 1808. Mounted on yellow backing.
