Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipts from Philip Knickerbocker to Jacob and Nelson Rifenburgh. Jacob is billed for $72.38 for medical bills from November 27, 1851 to September 19, 1861 and another $39.88 for other accounts. Nelson Rifenburgh is billed $7.12 for medical costs since August 1, 1858.
