At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. This folio contains two letters, neither of which are dated. Both appear to have been written for the purpose of expressing appreciation for friendship and saying goodbye, and may have been written near the end of Joseph Hale's life in or around 1837.

Aurelia Hale was born in Glastonbury, in Hartford, Connecticut sometime before 20 December 1798.
