Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Planning for upcoming elections in New York State politics. "You must defeat them at all hazards. I doubt the policy of the course you pursue...they will as they did here & in Troy bring up any thing that wears hair without relation to politics or qualifications. Boys, aliens, federalists & negroes." At the time both Van Buren and Miller were heavily involved in New York Democratic Politics.

Cornelius Miller was a lawyer and politician. For a time practiced law in partnership with Martin Van Buren.
