Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

To SC Gov. F.W. Pickens, re the warm welcome of SC troops in Richmond and the occupation of Annapolis by "20,000 black Republican troops." Brig. Gen. Bonham says Virginia "is rather poorly provided for the great fight which is before her. Lee has just taken command and may bring things right."
