Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sylvia has just finished supper. Tells Moe about a Captain who had once been a member of the Republican Party and was investigated by the FBI who asked him: "Have you been a member [of the communist party]." The Captain turned the tables on the FBI man and asked him the same question, and asked him for his identification papers as well.
