Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Moe worked guard all night. He notes there are too many ratings in his company so that the "poor private would be worked to death." He also notes that he was shocked by the coolness after he experienced the heat of New York. He hears other soldiers singing songs that remind him of Sylvia.
