Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A wooden handled Robeson Shuredge knife with 13 cm. long blade. U.N.S. is engraved on the base of the blade close to the handle. The sheath is in a light brown leather case with a snap closure around the handle. The sheath has a belt loop. Askin, T., C.Q. M, U.S.N. is written in black on the front. Askin, T. B. H., C. Q. M. is also written across the back of the sheath.
