At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Envelope addressed to Mrs. Cordelia S. Williams at 221 Harrison Avenue, N.E, Roanoke, Virginia. It is from Virginia Williams who was living at 610 Kenyon St., N.W., Washington, D.C when the letter was sent. Postage stamp on upper right corner cost three cents. There is a tear on right side where envelope was opened. Written in pencil is "school address inside."
