At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from William E. Johnson dated January 28, 1976. Mentions the cost of food, comparing his cooking to Roseann's, and watching hockey. Explains that the selling skills program for the securities industry that he has started is based on "Xerox PSS." Wishes to rent a car and drive near to New York City. Bill mentions the Gene Klavan Show and the departure of Finch, his radio co-host. Bill closes by writing how much he misses Roseann and that she is everything to him.
