At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from William E. Johnson dated January 30, 1976. Bill writes concerning his possible purchase of a car. He comments that he feels guilty spending money solely on himself. He has forwarded "survival pay" (not included) to Roseann and closes by stating he misses her terribly.
