Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from William E. Johnson dated February 5, 1976. Writes about snow in New York, visiting Rockefeller Plaza and St. Patrick's Cathedral. He bought a crystal decanter for mutual acquaintances at Tiffany's. Bill writes that he watched the Olympics and hadn't watched a hockey game all week. Expresses that he wished he could be with Roseann in California.
