At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert A. Winemiller to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated October 22, 1942. Robert checks in on Leonard and informs him that he is a member of a Quartermaster Battalion. His job is to make sure all trucks have gasoline. Robert notes he works from six to nine. Robert hopes to qualify for Officer Candidate School. Signed "Fuzz."
