At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated August 27, 1943. She is glad that Leonard is doing well in Atlantic City. She reports that he received a letter from the Selective Service which tells him to "report for introduction Sept. 6th 8 a.m." Also suggests that Leonard write to Doris Bixler. Signed, "Love Mother."
