One letter from Susan Prowell Graeff to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated December 4, 1943. Susan writes that she is going to the doctor this evening, but plans to clean the windows in two rooms downstairs. She eventually wants to paint the rooms as well. She expected help from Raymond, but he came home from work with a cold and will go to the doctor in the afternoon. She inquires about what the Wisconsin W.A.V.E.S. that Leonard mentioned does. Raymond thinks she drives a truck. She spoke to Dottie who told her about Ray Walverton. She mentions that Dottie’s mother also visited and has the grippe. She is glad that Leonard is doing well in school. She is sure he will get better at math if he studies. She asks Leonard to send her Robert Winemiller's address so she can send him a Christmas card. She also promises to take care of his Christmas savings check.

W.A.V.E.S. stands for Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service it was the women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. It was established on July 21, 1942 by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 30. This authorized the U.S. Navy to accept women into the Naval Reserve as commissioned officers at the enlisted level, so that officers and men that were determined to be fit could be placed on sea duty and replaced with women in shore establishments.
