Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Leonard Eugene Graeff to Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff dated August 16, 1944. He updates them on his day, and letters and birthday cards he received for his birthday. He thought the one they sent was very nice. He also mentions that Bertha Hutton wrote him and sent a church anniversary photo. He also writes that he saw President Roosevelt when he visited Hawaii on the 29th of July. He inspected the shop next to where he works and was about twenty-five feet from where he stepped out. He inquires about Joe Fortenbaugh.
