Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated August 18, 1945. Clipping features three images of celebrations that took place in Harrisburg after the announcement of Victory. The top images is a crowd of celebrators in front of the Patriot Company Building blocking the roads and car travel. The middle image is a parade of WAVES as they pass the reviewing stand holding flags and in uniform. The bottom image is a group of industrial workers carrying signs as they pass the reviewing stands. The two readable signs are, "Our No Strike Pledge is Unbroken," and "We Helped To Win The Fight."
