At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated November 4, 1945. Two articles are present one is concerning Adolf Hitler's car which is being displayed on Market Street in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. The second article is regarding school children who visited the battle ship Missouri. According to the article they did more damage to the ship in a day then the Japanese did the whole war.
