Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "21. Mined Harbor" depicting an explosion by a bridge and large ship with two dock workers running from the scene. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative that mentions likelihood of communists using atomic bombs on a waterfront. Text remarks a "leading scientist has warned us that tramp steamers could plant A-bombs in our harbors." Reiterates that the United States hopes for world peace.
