Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "40. Frontier Patrol" depicting Norwegian soldiers on skis along a border. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing the Atlantic Pact as an agreement by which "free nations" provide aid against attacks by enemy nations. Text gives an instance of Norway, a country on the border of Russia, as a peaceful nation that will engage in war if necessary.

The North Atlantic Treaty signed on April 4, 1949, established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The main goal of this treaty was as a preliminary defense against the Soviet Union's possible attack against westernized Europe.
