Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "45. Ambush in Indo-China" depicting a soldier shooting towards those on land. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing the Viet Minh fighting against the French and Viet Nam forces. Text mentions their guerrila tactics expected military success under the command of General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny.

The Viet Minh was a coalition formed by Ho Chi Minh as an anti-imperialist group seeking independence from France and Japanese occupation.

Jean Joseph Marie Gabriel de Lattre de Tassigny, GCB, MC was a French military commander from World War II and the First Indochina War.
