Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "46. Fighting Marine" depicting a portrait of Oliver P. Smith wearing a camaflouged helmet while battle ensues ashore. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing General Oliver P. Smith commanding the First Marine Division to march towards Hungnam on December 1950. Text also mentions his education and military history.

Oliver P. Smith was a commander of the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. He is noted for leading his company through difficult campaigns that took place in Inchon landing and the Chosin reservoir.
