Bessie William Ernst was an educator and resident of Detroit during the 1967 riots.

The Detroit Riots of 1967 occurred over a span of 5 days. Instigated by prolonged police brutality against African Americans, heat and a dense population. 43 people were killed. Most deaths were caused by the National Guard against civilians.
