At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, " The Negro Vote in the Presidential Election of 1956," by Henry Lee Moon dated 1957. Moon delves into the potentiality of the black voter with tables analyzing the African American populated cities during the presidential elections of 1952 and 1957. He includes how legislation, Supreme Court decisions, corporations and civil rights could affect their decision to vote.
