At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Munition Workers of Allied Countries..." dated 1939-1945. Poster features four scenes separated by a banner that reads, "Munition Workers Of Allied Countries... Are Hitting Back At Hitler... Through British Factories!" The top left scene is a plane dropping a bomb on a convoy. The top right scene depicts two tanks firing on enemy tanks. The bottom left scene is of factory workers building planes. The bottom right scene is workers on four assembly lines building tanks. There is a stamp reading, "Wm. A. Donovan" and the text, "United Nations" on the back of the poster.
