At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Women of the Allies" dated 1941-1945. Poster features six women in four different scenes. The top scene is a woman swinging a bottle. The second scene is a nurse looking at a medical instrument. The third scene is a woman working on a piece of machinery. The fourth scene is three women working on a plane. The poster also features the flags of Great Britain, the United States, The Soviet Union, China, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece Yugoslavia, Netherlands, Norway and Poland along the left edge of the poster. The poster reads, "Women of the Allies.. Fight For Freedom" There is a stamp reading, "Wm. A. Donovan" and the text, "United Nations" on the back of the poster.
