At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by International News Photos dated March 25, 1957. Shows a plane coming in to land on the deck of a ship. The attached press release describes the new technology of a signal mirror that takes the risk out of carrier landings. It also mentions that the signal is replacing the old method of paddle wavers directing landings. The photo is stamped on the back with the date and International News Photos information.
