At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by International News Photos dated April 26, 1957. Shows two soldiers in a car with machine guns parked in front of the palace of Jordan. The press release attached to the photo reports that the two men are standing guard for King Hussein. It also mentions that the military now controls Jordan under martial law. The photo is stamped on the back with the date and International News Photos information.
