At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "Abraham Lincoln Toni Kin, Qa Aesop Tawaoyake Kin," Life of Abraham Lincoln and Aesop's Fables, dated 1893. The small pamphlet was printed in the Santee dialect by students at the Santee Normal Training School, Santee, Nebraska. Includes two titles; "Life of Abraham Lincoln" intrepreted by Reverend James Garvie and "Aesop's Fables" intrepreted by Jennie W. Cox and Eunice Kitto.

The Santee Normal Training School was established in 1870 as a boarding school by Alfred L. Riggs. The school emphasized using the Dakota language to teach the students instead of enforcing English. It closed in 1937.

Eunice Kitto and Jennie W. Cox were both teachers at the school.
